Until fairly recently, gender was seen as something that was purely about the body you were born with. If you were born with a vagina, you were a woman; if you had a penis, you were a man.
However, we have come to understand that things are not quite as simple as that for everyone.
Put simply, some people feel different on the inside to the body they have on the outside. You might have been born with a male body but feel you are a woman on the inside, or vice versa. That’s called being transgender.
Or you might feel like you aren’t either male or female, in which case you might describe yourself as non-binary.
Or you might feel like it changes over time, in which case you might identify as gender fluid.
And feeling that your internal identity matches the body you were born with has a name too: cisgender.
The real point here is that there is a whole range of genders, and only you know what feels right to you.
In this blog, we try to be inclusive as well as accurate. So if what we are describing depends on the physical body you have, we’ll say so. But just bear in mind that person could identify as a variety of genders.
And if you catch us making an assumption that might not be true, please tell us!
